I’m not a scientist, a famous speaker, an activist, vlogger, or the host of a television show.  But I do have things to say that aren’t being said in the other blogs.  This is my cyberspace soapbox and I intend to speak to matters of importance to the secular community from my own unique perspective.

A former fundamentalist’s fundamentalist of the Pentecostal persuasion, I am passionate and excited about being here in the first steps we’re taking towards a secular world.  I’m a working man who is going back to school for a degree in Cultural Anthropology.  I’m divorced with one teenage daughter who inspires me daily to be a better person.  So I will do my best to tell the truth as I see it straight from my trailer-park home amongst the tumbleweeds of Bakersfleld, California.

My commitment to my readers:

I will endeavor to temper my criticism of people with whom I disagree.  I don’t want to hurt anyone.  I just want to get my ideas and thoughts out there.  And since I seem to disagree with almost everyone at one time or another, it also seems prudent from a security standpoint not to rattle cages more than I have to.

I will be objective about my arguments.  If skepticism were a religion, objectivity would be the holy sacrament.

I will evaluate arguments on their merits.  If someone disagrees with me and shows me that I am wrong, I will have no problem admitting it.  I started admitting I was wrong when I left the Church, so it isn’t like I haven’t had any practice.

The only catch is that I refuse to give a platform for any type of lunatic fringe hate speech.  I won’t tolerate threats–even if they’re “just making a point”.  All manner of foul language is welcome here, though, since I’m a proponent of free speech and the free sharing of ideas.  But there’s a difference in saying “fuck” once in a while and calling someone a vile name like “cunt”.

So please, feel free to love me, hate me, rip me a new one.  All I ask is that you remember that as atheists we’re on the same team and you try to keep your posts on topic and not attack people in a personal manner.  I want to see critical thought in action here, not a soap opera where everyone is labelled as good or evil based on how they line up with your sacred-cow beliefs.  State it and defend it.  But refrain from ad hominem attacks.   Mr. Hominem gets enough grief from the Christians, let’s not attack him further.

  1. I can honestly say that I respect you as a person, a commenter on my blog. You do make arguments personal, and your comments are logical, and very respectful. Hats off to you good sir.
